FREIGHT AGENCY Q & A – MG Ward Solutions

“I appreciate the opportunity to have joined the GlobalTranz team. I have never worked with a company I had not personally met first. All my meetings were by phone and it was a little scary at the beginning; however, I do not regret it. GlobalTranz allows an agent to be successful as one wants to be. The company provides the tools and back office support to guide you in the direction where one can obtain the answers to move forward.” – Martha Gallego-Ward | MG Ward Solutions

BUSINESS

How did you get your start in the logistics industry?

Prior to logistics, I was the shipper. I was the Sales Service Manager for Universal Container Corporation, plastics manufacturer based out of Puerto Rico, servicing the pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic industry for 14 years. I participated in the selection of carriers to handle our ocean shipments delivering to the U.S. within a seven-day cycle time and hitting on-time deliveries 98% of the time. I think logistics was in my future plan without me knowing it. I moved back to Illinois in 2001, right before 911. In 2003 I joined ABF Freight System as a rookie. I had never sold transportation services in my life, but understood the importance, having the experience of the other side of equation. ABF was, and is, a great company, the best transportation school I could have joined. My boss had moved in to the terminal manager role and I took over the largest territory without product experience. Our transit times were the slowest in the market place, 7-9 days to California; 3-4 days to the Midwest. I was able to spin transit times understanding order cycle times, inventory position and targeting on-time deliveries based on when the customer actually needed the product. Identifying customer requirements was, and is, one of my strengths. I set up the account for success. I was told by my colleague’s “always tell the customer they need to give you three tries before they decide to change your service.” I said, “No, I want to identify what they need and how I can fit our services into their program.” It worked. I like being thrown into the maze and figure things out and utilize all the tools I have available; this is very important.

During my seven plus years at ABF I grew my territory exponentially; I went to President Club, received recognitions consecutive years in a row for top performer, and I was moving 63,000,000 lbs. freight by the time I left the company. I became a Supply Chain Logistics advisor for my customer’s and was always there to try and figure out the best and most economical way to move their freight; while allowing them to meet with their customer demands.

How long have you been in the industry?

13 years

How long have you been partnered with GlobalTranz?

Totally engaged, started January 2016

What do you find inspiring/motivating?

I love new challenges and projects and becoming a part of my customer’s team. I work to earn their trust and respect and want them to know that I am truly working for them, in their best interest. I find it fascinating to learn about products and services offered in our market place and how each company takes a different approach to their business. Everyone has a mutual end goal; but each one has a different path to get there.

How many members are on your team?

Four (4) total; three CSR’s and myself.

Do you utilize Customer Service, if so how big is your CSR team?

Customer Service is the driving force behind our business and I have three dedicated members assigned to customer specific accounts. Jackie Reynoso is my lead Operations person. Jackie has a Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain and Logistics; she started her career on the International side. She worked for Hapag Lloyd prior to joining our team. Working with our team is his first experience with domestic LTL; TL; Volume, Expedite and as the third party liaison. Jackie handles 50% of my revenue accounts. Jackie recently had a baby, her second child, and is able to work from home. Her background experience brings strength and leadership into the team. Jeimmy Smith handles one of my largest accounts from rating their daily orders, presenting for carrier selection, entering the orders, tendering and following-up through delivery. Jeimmy has worked for me for a year now. Jimena Balvin is our newest member. Jimena started her studies to become a teacher. Jimena is my Administrative lead person; she is handling order expediting and follow-ups; re-bills; OS&D as well as small accounts assigned to her; she is also working on some consistent truckload moves and helping with the development of a new account with hand holding requirements.

Where do you see yourself and your business within the next year?

I would like to add a person to develop truckload and be able to utilize the brokerage advantage we have. I do love our truckload team in Arizona and Honduras; they are awesome to work with; so I would go the route that makes the most sense for the customer and the company. I would also like to add a sales person as well as another CSR. Growth is obviously our goal; however, organized growth is important. If we do a good job; add value for our customer’s; I believe the good word will get out and our doors will open to more opportunities.

What are you currently working on?

We are working on opening an office. I am hoping this becomes reality in the next couple of months. While the employees still have the flexibility to work from home; the office is a good meeting point a couple of times a week for group unity, training and interaction.

What service do you utilize the most (i.e. LTL, FLT, Expedited, Supply Chain)

LTL is the main driver of our business; followed by truckload. Many of my customer’s use expedite(d), but I have noticed a decline in expedite(d), probably driven by better planning and inventory position by customers. However, most of them do require this service from time to time. Supply Chain is another area I will always present to the right customer in need of the service.

What obstacles have you overcome to get thus far?

Training and building a team in a short time period has been my biggest challenge; as well as keeping the business going without interruption. There have not been enough hours in a day to get everything done (with) quality. I do have to give a special thank you to our great Training Specialist, Alison Crawford. She is awesome.

What are some words of encouragement you can give to newer agents just getting started?

“There is light at the end of the tunnel and I am started to see mine and I am so excited. Yes, you have to invest the time, and you need to share your earnings with the right people on board because one cannot do this by themselves. Letting others be a part of your growth and success will make you even more successful.”

PERSONAL

Where are you from?

I was born in Chicago, IL and raised between Chicago and western suburbs; and I spent 15 years in Puerto Rico, and then returned in 2001.

Where do you like to travel?

I have gone to Alaska a couple of times, while my son was in the U.S. Air Force. We really enjoyed Alaska. I enjoy traveling to different parts of the U.S. Continent and learning about different parts of our country; as well as I always go back to Puerto Rico when I am able to visit with friends and family. I love the Caribbean.

Do you have any hobbies?

I like to exercise; walking/jogging; step aerobics and Zumba. I like working with our church compassion ministry. I would like to have more time for this.

What do you like to do in your downtime, who do you like to spend it with?

I enjoy date nights with husband; and my children with their spouses (I have three sons); spending time taking my grandson Cristian to his basketball practice and watching his games; and going to Indianapolis to visit my twin granddaughters and two grandsons and I also like to take road trips to Arkansas to visit my in-laws. Yes, our family is scattered and I am spread thin but that is ok.

FREIGHT AGENT Q & A – David Su

“When I hear my clients tell me because of my service that they are able to expand and create more jobs in their local communities this excites me, this is the reward that brings me the most joy and gives me the constant motivation to work harder, smarter, and to be even more diligent in my profession…” – David Su – Authorized GlobalTranz Freight Agent

David Su, GlobalTranz Authorized Freight Agent

BUSINESS

How did you get your start in the logistics industry?

I got into the logistics industry about 3 and half years ago. I was in a transitional period in my life trying to figure out which industry would be the best fit for me that would reflect my personality, character, strengths, and business ethics. I had a 5 minute conservation with a friend of mine that I attended church with who was working for a logistics brokerage firm at the time. He told me about the industry and how there was potential to consistently grow. So I did some research and decided it would be a great fit. I got hired at small brokerage firm after a few months later and learned everything I could about how the industry worked.

How long have you been in the industry?

3 and half years.

How long have you been a freight agency with GlobalTranz?

2 and half years.

What do you find inspiring/motivating?

My faith and belief in God inspires me, for God to lead me to a company like Globaltranz I found it simply amazing and very grateful. I am able to work anytime, anywhere and being able to dictate my work load on my own terms is also inspiring. When I was with my first brokerage firm, the attitude they taught their employees to have was that the job we were doing was to facilitate and mediate the freight that was being transported from point A to point B. If anything happens to the freight (i.e. damages, missing pallets, delays in transit, re-bills for accessorials for re-classed freight) we were to have the mental attitude that it was either the client’s fault for not properly giving the correct information or that “it’s just freight, it happens”. This wasn’t good enough for me so I began to ask myself, “What can I do to set myself apart from everyone in the industry when it comes to servicing clients and being more empathetic?” The answer was to become more of a problem solver than being just the “rates” guy or the typical “broker”. So my motivation is simple, to provide solutions for problems my clients face every day with trucking companies and other “typical” brokers, to help small businesses grow by providing cost saving methods of transportation of their products, to create supply chain and logistics operation efficiency.

When I hear my clients tell me because of my service that they are able to expand and create more jobs in their local communities this excites me, this is the reward that brings me the most joy and gives me the constant motivation to work harder, smarter, and to be even more diligent in my profession, it gives me that purpose when I wake up in the morning and look at reflection in the mirror knowing that I am doing my part to contribute to the great engine we call the American economy. Hearing from clients that they were able to create more jobs means being able to help that fellow person the means to provide for their families, encouraging them that they are not useless and that there is still hope in this country, that hard work still means something.

How many members are on your team?

Just me, I am a solo agent.

Do you utilize Customer Service, if so how big is your CSR team?

No, I mostly utilize the ops team on truckloads.

Where do you see yourself and your business within the next year?

I see myself increasing my book of business by another 50% and being able to travel to visit my clients.

What are you currently working on?

I am in the process of finishing up some presentations to bring on more clients.

What service do you utilize the most (i.e. LTL, FLT, Expedited, Supply Chain)

LTL and FTL.

What obstacles have you overcome to get this far?

I’d say learning how to deal with trucking companies on the billing and claims issues. Also understanding how my client’s businesses operate and how their industry operates.

What are some words of encouragement you can give to newer agents / agencies just getting started?

“Don’t be discouraged and always remember that it takes 100 ‘NO’s to get 1 ‘YES’. All it takes is one client and if you service them well, more business will come your way through referrals. Also remember to try to distinguish yourself differently from the rest of the competition out there, ask yourself objectively how you can do that.”

PERSONAL

Where are you from?

I was born in South Korea on a US Military base. Immigrated here to the US when was 1 and grew up most of my life in Diamond Bar, CA.

Do you have any hobbies?

I like to play Texas Hold’em, play guitar, love to work out, and depending on the season I like to participate in outdoor activities. (snowboarding in the winter, and ATVing in the summer)

What do you like to do in your downtime, who do you like to spend it with?

My downtime, I just like to relax. I either go have dinner with friends, or watch a Clippers game at the Staples center with friends. Sundays I have dinner with my family. I also love to volunteer and give back, every 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month I help out with a food pantry and give groceries to needy families.

GlobalTranz
FREIGHT AGENTS Q & A – Jason and Randall Wardle

“Rates are important, but building long lasting, loyal shippers requires a willingness to go above your customer’s expectations and do things for them that others have not.”

BUSINESS

How did you get your start in the logistics industry?

Jason graduated from Utah State University in 2001 with a degree in Marketing and International Business. In 2002 he began working with a firm selling small package services through Airborne Express, which later became DHL. After DHL left the domestic marketplace in 2009, he began selling LTL freight and focused exclusively on freight side.

Randy received a business degree from Brigham Young University in 2001. He managed the operations for a product manufacturer, with responsibilities for freight shipping among other things.

As brothers, we’ve always talked about building a business together. We finally determined it was time to stop talking about it and do something. The freight and logistics industry made the most sense for us. In June 2014, we left our former employers and started Mile21 Shipping. We looked at several large 3PLs to partner with and selected GlobalTranz because they had the best technology in the industry, very competitive rates, and an attractive agent model. It is obvious that GlobalTranz cares about our success.

What do you find inspiring/motivating?

“Our business provides a great opportunity to take care of our families. Since we have started this business, we enjoy more flexibility to spend time with our children and be involved in their lives in a way that wasn’t possible before. We want to show our children the value of a strong work ethic and the rewards that come from entrepreneurship. We find this very motivating.”

This is a business where everybody wins. When we bring on a new customer, they win because we can reduce their shipping costs. They get a level of support from us that they are not accustomed to having. The freight carrier wins because we give them access to new shippers and they can grow their business. We win and GlobalTranz wins because there is enough margin in between to allow us to build a successful business and accomplish our financial goals.

How many members are on your team?

We’re a team of two brothers.

Do you utilize Customer Service, if so how big is your CSR team?

All of our customer service is handled in house.

Where do you see yourself and your business within the next year?

Our goal is to bring on two outside sales representatives to allow our agency to continue to grow more quickly. We hope to be knocking on the door of the Top 20 in the next couple of years.

What are you currently working on?

We are constantly looking for opportunities to strengthen relationships with existing customers and build a bond that goes deeper than just low shipping rates. We utilize the low rates that GlobalTranz has to offer to get new clients interested, but clients continue shipping over the long run with us because we do everything we can to take care of them and make things easy on them. Rates are important, but building long lasting, loyal shippers requires a willingness to go above your customer’s expectations and do things for them that others have not.

What service do you utilize the most (i.e. LTL, FLT, Expedited, Supply Chain)

The majority of our business is LTL, but we have recently found success in assisting clients with full truckloads and expedited shipments. We have been brokering many truckloads ourselves, but we have been very impressed with the Truckload teams at GTZ and have started using them more frequently with great success.

What obstacles have you overcome to get thus far?

Like most businesses, we started small and had to work very hard to add a base of great customers over the last 18 months. To grow a business like this, you have to talk to a lot of people and be willing to make a lot of phone calls. No matter how good your customer service is, in this industry, there will always be attrition. If you are not adding new customers, you will find your business going in the wrong direction.

What are some words of encouragement you can give to newer agents / agencies just getting started?

“Every customer and prospect is different. Find out what they want and give it to them. Some customers want to spend time chatting and are looking to make friends, others just want to get down to business and are only interested in making their shipping process as simple as possible. Pay attention to subtle cues and match your style to theirs.”

PERSONAL

Where are you from?

We are both from the great state of Utah and grew up in the Salt Lake area. As Brigham Young once said, “THIS is the place!”

Where do you like to travel?

We love to go camping and hiking and explore National Parks. We spend as much time in the mountains with our families as we can.

Do you have any hobbies?

We both enjoy playing and watching sports. We also love the opportunity we have to serve in our church and help young men in the Boy Scouts of America.

What do you like to do in your downtime, who do you like to spend it with?

We spend most of our time with our families. Our children are involved in multiple sports, including soccer, baseball, flag-football, cross-country, and dance, to name just a few.

Have you read any motivational/inspiring books lately?

Randy recommends EntreLeadership by Dave Ramsey. Jason hasn’t read any good books since elementary school, but he does recommend watching the movies Rudy and The Three Amigos. Lots of inspiration in those…

Anything else you’d like to share… we’d love to hear it.

We would like to personally thank all of the leadership team at GlobalTranz, especially Andrew Leto and Mike Leto for their efforts to build this business into something that we are all proud to be part of. The risk they took in 2003 to start this company has impacted our lives and thousands of others in such a positive way.   We are happy to be a part of this team and are anxious to help take it to new heights. Thank you!!

AGENT Q & A – David Wayt

“Our vision is ‘We operate with a Caring Heart, a Playful Spirit, and SMOKIN’ HOT SERVICE!’ That vision is posted in multiple places in the office and on our business cards, and in our email signatures as a reminder to us of what we are all about.” – David Wayt

BUSINESS

How did you get your start in the logistics industry?

In 1994 I had a recording contract in Nashville, TN. During that time I met a guy who was in the logistics business and he convinced me to buy a franchise from his company. Literally hours before I was to sign the contract my Brother-in-Law who was a top 10 Agent for Landstar, called me and said he just heard I was getting into the logistics business and he was opening up a new agency in San Leandro, CA and needed a partner. I put the pen down and partnered with him, it was a great experience.

How long have you been in the industry?

Off and on I have been in Logistics for 22 years, I did spend 4 of those years working with Franklin Covey as a “Coach/Trainer” Specializing in Management Coaching, Personal Improvement, Real Estate, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People etc. During that time I wrote 2 training manuals, one on Real Estate Investing and one on Personal Development.

How long have you been partnered with GlobalTranz?

I have been with GlobalTranz for 12 months in October of this year. It has been one of the best business decisions I have ever made. With GlobalTranz help and support we have doubled our business since last October and are still trending upward.

What do you find inspiring/motivating?

I have always been inspired by those who make an effort and sacrifice to help others, although I am not always “that guy” I still try to be. Part of our mission statement for My Logistics Partner states that we want to “Employ Good People and give them the tools and support they need to make a Great Living for themselves and their families.”

How many members are on your team?

We currently have 11 members of our team. Jhana and Krystal in Accounting and Support (both part time) Jon and Troy in Freight Management and Operations, Steve and Johnny in Outside sales (commission only) Coby, Ryan and Dave in Inside Sales (base plus commission) myself as President ie. “Chief Cook and Bottle Washer”, and my sweet wife Gina is our CFM “Chief Financial Mom”.

Do you utilize Customer Service, if so how big is your CSR team?

We do utilize the GlobalTranz Customer Service Team, however most of our work in that regard is done by our own Team.   Our vision is “We operate with a Caring Heart, a Playful Spirit, and SMOKIN’ HOT SERVICE!” That vision is posted in multiple places in the office and on our business cards, and in our email signatures as a reminder to us of what we are all about.

Where do you see yourself and your business within the next year?

Over the next year we anticipate that our growth trend will continue. I would like to hire one more inside sales rep, but of course our revenue needs to get to that point where it would easily support another Team Member. Ideally we would like our gross revenue to be over 6 million.

What are you currently working on?

I am constantly trying to “systemize” what we do. In other words to create and maintain internal systems where if each member does A and B they can expect C. Along with our account managers we experiment with lists, time schedules follow ups etc to fine-tune our sales and retention model. Nurturing our current customer base is much more productive than cold calling, however, we know that growth only comes through new business so a balance between the 2 are crucial. And there is always the possibility that you will lose a large customer for reasons that are out of your control, so bringing in new customers is a critical element of what we do. Each of my Account reps is aware of the principle that no customer should be responsible for more than 25% of the business, because losing them could be disastrous.

What service do you utilize the most (i.e. LTL, FLT, Expedited, Supply Chain)

In order to reach our financial goals we are putting an emphasis on Truckload freight, however we have discovered that LTL is a great way to keep a steady base, as well as to be an easy way to introduce our company, gain their trust through outstanding service, and open the door to a customer’s Truckload freight and other services that we can render. Politically correct or not, we have referred to LTL as the “Gateway drug to Truckload.”

What obstacles have you overcome to get thus far?

I think the biggest obstacle I have had to overcome in our growth is to get and maintain “buy in” from our own team. As we grow I think it becomes more difficult for those who are not directly connected to the income and revenue stream to see how important their responsibilities actually are, and how they truly are connected to it. We occasionally post on the whiteboard in the office “Yes we are still doing that” as a reminder to continue to follow the course of action that we have determined is appropriate for each position in the company. One of the things we do to connect one another is that we have regular company meetings in the conference room (we call it the War Room). We all stand up and sing our Fight Song called “Its a Great day to be a Freight Guy!” (complete with actions) then give updates on how we are doing as a company and make adjustments there. After the business portion we have a spinning wheel, and a plinko game complete with prizes anywhere between a snickers wrapped in a $10.00 bill and $25 dollar card to Nordstrom or Appleby’s etc. Whenever an Account Manager has a new customer who actually booked a shipment since last meeting, he or she gets a spin, when the combined new customers of all the Account Managers is 5 or more, the whole office gets a spin for each multiple of 5. Sometimes that gets a little expensive but surely pays off in the long run in morale, camaraderie and revenue. What are some words of encouragement you can give to newer agents just getting started?

What are some words of encouragement you can give to newer agents just getting started?

If I were to give advice to new agents it would be to identify and prioritize your roles in life and write them down. Mine are Husband, Father, CEO, Self Improver etc. Every week before your week starts, identify the 2 or 3 things that you could do that would have the most positive impact on each of those roles. Then, insert those important items in your calendar (not your to do list).   If you have the integrity to keep all those promises to yourself you will maintain a balance in your life and enrich your career, your family and your spirit.

PERSONAL

Where are you from?

I grew up in the rough part of town in the San Fernando Valley, in Southern California. Later moved to Utah and attended Brigham Young University (Go Cougs) and settled here in Utah County. I have a beautiful wife, 7 above average children and 11 (and counting) adorable grandkids.

Where do you like to travel?

Because most of my career I have been either the only employee or so hands on that it was difficult to get away, I have not done allot of traveling to faraway places, but because family time has been so important, I have a motor home that we can all jump in and head for the mountains. That has been the source of many fun activities and memories.

Do you have any hobbies?

When I was 21 and in college, I joined and sang in a local dance band to help make ends meet. I am now 62 and am still performing in bands (and an occasional community play). Creating and performing music is magic to me and makes all my concerns melt away.

What do you like to do in your downtime, who do you like to spend it with?

With 7 children and 11 grandchildren, my downtime is always consumed with family activities. There is never a dull moment, and I can truly say my life is full.

Have you read any motivational/inspiring books lately?

I like to read nonfiction books and my scriptures. Anything from biographies to self-improvement, and business improvement. Although I have ready many nonfiction books, I have a tough time getting started with them because the little over achiever in my head wonders how this is going to help me in the future. “Becoming Your Best” by Steven R. Shallenberger is my nightstand reference book. I will occasionally skip my scheduled reading and open it at a random spot and remind myself of what’s important.

Anything else you’d like to share… we’d love to hear it.

My Aunt Margie use to say, “Everyone has their own sack of rocks to drag around.” And it’s true that we all have challenges whether business or personal. It is key to keep your priorities straight or as Steven Covey said “The main thing is to keep the main thing as the main thing”. One tire out of balance shakes the whole car! Strive to keep a balance with your body, mind, spirit and relationships.   This business can be lucrative but it can also consume your life.   If you do not make a conscious effort to maintain all elements in your life that are important to you, the loudest one will take control.

AGENT Q & A – Lori M. Olson

“I believe that building relationships is the key in this business not only with your customers but with the carriers too, when they do a good job, you look good and they can help you also especially with those recurring lanes you might have with some customers.”

BUSINESS

How did you get your start in the logistics industry?

My husband used to work for a Logistics Broker for a few years, then we decided to start on our own, I had zero experience in logistics, but we took the decision and I learned the business with his help.

How long have you been in the industry?

Over 5 years.

How long have you been partnered with GlobalTranz?

2 1/2 years.

What do you find inspiring/motivating?

I love this business, getting new customers is always motivating, as learning new things every day, working on your own brings you the opportunity to go the extra mile knowing that the rewards will benefit you and your efforts will pay off. I believe that building relationships is the key in this business not only with your customers but with the carriers too, when they do a good job, you look good and they can help you also especially with those recurring lanes you might have with some customers.

How many members are on your team?

We are currently 7.

Do you utilize Customer Service, if so how big is your CSR team?

Not really as mostly for Customer Service issues, Dave Hillstrom and I handle issues directly.

Where do you see yourself and your business within the next year?

My expectations are to be able to grow passing this knowledge to some Juniors Account managers that can start from now to learn this business and secure a job being independent and at the same time building relationships and getting more customers. With that I can have some more time to offer the same great service at a large scale and growing our Revenue and Gross Margin as well!

What are you currently working on?

We are planning on moving OD loads as a regular basis instead of occasionally, also in getting more business with our border customers going in and out of Mexico, being that my primary language is spanish, it is a great advantage to capture that business, and also with Canada.

What service do you utilize the most (i.e. LTL, FLT, Expedited, Supply Chain)

I think we do equally LTL and TL, with a small percentage on Expedited shipments, which is one of the best expedited services I have worked with!

What obstacles have you overcome to get thus far?

A lot, struggle with a decision of changing the secure paycheck being an employee, to securing your income based on your effort, work and long hours, wouldn’t change it though. Also your team, it is important, but I have learned that we should count our income based on our work, our team’s is an add on, but their production depends on their personal goals, so it is not the best option to count on their production as a secure part of your income I would think.

What are some words of encouragement you can give to newer agents just getting started?

I would say, if you took the challenge to start on your own, and you know you can do it, but it’s not working yet as you would like to, don’t give up, part of your challenge comes with struggle, just keep trying to get more customers, show them you are on top of their shipments. I believe that building relationships with customers is what is going to secure that they keep working with you.  There will always be issues, that’s part of the business, but the key is how you handle them, showing them they can relay on your service, that you will always try to give the best of you, in how you choose your carrier and how you follow up, from the beginning to the end . The sky is the limit!
