Starting Sunday, July 12th, and concluding on Saturday, July 18th, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) Operation Safe Driver Week 2020 will take place throughout North America. During the week, law enforcement will significantly increase their focus on unsafe driving behaviors and issue citations and warnings to deter these behaviors.
This year, law enforcement will focus on speeding. Recent data from Reuters shows speeding on interstate highways, state highways, and expressways has increased by 75% compared to January and February. According to the Governor’s Highway Safety Association, the COVID-19 Stay-At-Home orders have decreased road traffic, which may have contributed to the spike in speeding in recent months. Additionally, law enforcement will diligently issue citations and warnings for other dangerous driver behaviors, such as distracted driving, failure to use a seatbelt, and drunk driving.
Since 2007, Operation Safe Driver Week has focused on reducing roadway fatalities and high-risk driving behavior by issuing citations and warnings to commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers and passenger vehicle drivers. In 2019 officers issued 46,752 citations to drivers, with 1,454 of those citations issued to CMV drivers for speeding violations.
How Does CVSA Operation Safe Driver Week Impact Shippers?
Historically Operation Safe Driver Week and CVSA’s annual roadside inspection blitz tighten capacity and can lead to delivery delays. During these times, some carriers opt to stay off the road to avoid citations or an inspection, which can impact shipper’s transportation operations.
